Animanga in the News: 5/3/11

Obata Yuuki's popular manga "Bokura ga Ita" will be made into a movie starring Ikuta Touma and Yoshitaka Yuriko and is slated for a spring 2012 release.

The original manga began serialization in 2002, and is one of the rare few shoujo manga titles to have total sales of over 10 million copies. It is also a recipient of the 50th Shogakukan Manga Award for the Shoujo manga category. Set in Kushiro, Sapporo and Tokyo, the manga tells the tale of the pure love story of the two leads Yano and Nanami, spanning over 10 years. The film will be broken up into two parts.

Yano Motoharu is a popular boy well-loved especially by all his female classmates, but he has many dark places in his heart. On playing such a character, Ikuta said, "I kinda feel bad that it has to be someone like me to play such a cool, and yet human character like Yano, but I'll do my best to breathe life into this character". Ikuta, who turns 26 this year, added with a laugh, "This may be my last time ever wearing a school uniform again, so I'd like to experience the bittersweetness of school life to the fullest." On the other hand, Yoshitaka plays the role of Takahashi Nanami, who is attracted to Yano, and is able to accept the darkness he carries. On her first time starring in a manga love story adaptation, Yoshitaka says, "I believe this is a stunning manga that has been read by many, that has made many hearts throb and itch with excitement, and certainly one that is very well-loved. I want to do my best without betraying or embarrassing fans of the original manga."

In addition, Takaoka Sousuke will be playing the role of Takeuchi Masafumi, who is Yano's childhood friend and best friend, and who watches over the couple as they grow, but eventually ends up falling in love with Nanami as well. He commented, "I want to meld well into my role so that this can become a piece that will make many happy."

The director will be Miki Takahiro (Solanin [2010]), while the script will be written by Yoshida Tomoko (Closed Note [2007]). Filming begins in May and takes place somewhere in Kushiro, also a location in which the actual manga is set.
