Gundam AGE Aims to Draw New Fans with Intergenerational Story Series-related merchandise equipped with IC chips allow buyers to play special games for free. The Bandai Namco Group announced on the 13th that the latest installation of popular anime "Mobile Suit Gundam", "Mobile Suit Gundam AGE", would begin airing on MBS TBS starting in October. Plastic models and figures will also begin to go on sale from October, at prices ranging from ¥630 to ¥6000.
There have been 14 installations of the Gundam TV series thus far, and it has been approximately two and a half years since the previous installation, "Gundam 00 Second Season" ended in March 2009. "Gundam AGE" tells a story spanning three generations of protagonists, and, according the Sunrise's managing director Miyakawa Yasuo, "depicts an intergenerational conflict, and we hope to nurture a new Gundam and attract a new strata of fans to the series."
The plastic models and figurines will come with in-built IC chips, and by putting them together with special machines (sold separately), allows owners to play special game machines and battle against a computer for free at shops and event venues.
"Gundam AGE" tells the story of a space colony being suddenly attacked by a mysterious enemy. The protagonist develops "Gundam AGE" according to the blueprints left by his mother, and faces the mysterious enemies. The fighting continues into the time of his son and even his grandson, and as time goes by, the Gundams evolve as well.
