Dev Update: MH v2.3?

+ posted by Nimloth in Site News on Oct 5, 2008 04:13

It has been a while since we last wrote to you about our development status. The last message we gave you was about our moving to dedicated hosting, and a brief mention of MH v2.3. Lots has been done since then, and we feel confident enough to give you all a small sneak peak at what is hitting MangaHelpers next!

Before we go on to that though, we wanted to let you know that a beta period will soon be starting on MangaHelpers. Once we activate the beta period, we will randomly send out access accounts to members of the community. We will reward some of the more active members first as a thank you for all they have done, and then randomly select bulk amounts of people with a mass invitation.

We greatly appreciate any feedback that you can give us if you are one of the lucky beta invitation recepients!

We have been working diligently, taking constructive suggestions from our community and been implementing those that make the most sense for the website. Keeping it close to heart that our number one mission is to provide you with the best place for translators and translations on the internet, we are pretty sure you will love what we have in store for you!

Now, without stalling the inevitable any further, here is a quick changelog and sneakpeak:

    It will vary based on where you are on the website.

    Looks nice, but I hope that you'd be able choose your own header instead of having the site choosing one for you depending on where you are... (either from a set of preexisting headers or an option to upload your own personalized header), and the background as well :)

    Backgrounds will not be customizable, same goes for the header. There is a reason behind the insanity :)

    Actually, I should note this here.

    All of the sections of the website will be interacting with each other, giving you a fluid experience no matter where on the website you are. You will find that a lot of the things you actually use these websites for has been more accessible, and have more actual value than before.

    The implementation of "My AFF" will allow you to quickly navigate to anywhere on the website within seconds, and good use of Ajax/DHTML technology for filtering and searching needs provides for some nifty functionality.

    Content aggregation has been put up so that any one section of the website has direct relevance to at least one other. This means that if you are in the Manga Section, there will be relevant syndication with Translators, Chapters, Raws, Scanlations and authors in general.

    The same goes for the Translators section, where translators get a visible portfolio of their translation work. The way the database is set up is so that each translation will also list available scanlations it has been used in, what rating the trans has, which raw was used for the translation and so forth. There's also comments and the Translator training tips!

    The remaining sections that we have not given specifics on are also deeply tied in with everything you could ask for!

    Then, lastly theres the forums. We have developed the Manga Section in a way that dynamically integrates our forums and the community for each series into our Manga Resource. There's also the Forums part of my AFF which lets you "Favorite" on-site any forum you wish for quick access.

    We have also integrated onsite, email and rss notification, subscribable per user per toggle - to a lot of aspects of the website, so rest assured that your latest fix is only a click away no matter where in the world you are! :-]

    I can see a problem with labeling LQ/MQ/HQ to scans... you should only have it for the raw.

    Otherwise, it's good :]

    It's member ranked. Quality is determined not by the author but by the community who reads them :)

    @doobious:

    What exactly is it you would be looking for in Doujin/Amateur support? I am thinking from a technical point of view, like what would be cool?

    Artist Profile, Lifestream (tracks actions news, comments, doujins, everything and anything), Reading/viewing of doujin, download support, rating, comments, recruit-helpers/jobs functionality and syndication to global feeds?

    Or is it something else you had in mind?

    Just throwing ideas out there ;)

    Good thing You've decided to upgrade the Forum, I'm sure you'll do a great Job.

    Q: Are there going to be thread or a Suggestion thread about it soon? That way, Other MH Members can Give suggestions of what they think is missing and should easy things for 'em in the forums.

    Again, thanks for the hard work.

    @The Adamant Dragon:
    For now we don't have a public suggestions thread planned. When we start the beta period, there will be a feedback system in place there, however any major additions/changes are likely to get scheduled for future development since bug fixes and correcting functionality takes precedence.

    This is a big development project, and we have to follow some sort of systematic time line in order to get things done. That being said, I will not rule out the possibility of a "public feature request" setup for the future, as we always appreciate good feedback and tips on what to do to improve the website.

    Approximately when is this beta period starting, and how many people are u planning to dish it out to?
    The top series links are being removed from the Nav-Bar?

    @ravijha85
    The beta period is going to start when we feel that the development has reached a point where we're comfortable inviting people to play with it all. One of the core policies we maintain is that we do not want to release anything buggy or unfinished. While beta period is about cleaning up bugs, there are still things needing done with many aspects of the website before we are prepared to let people play around.

    A whole other aspect of it, is that we want to present the first testers with a "Wow!!!!" experience, rather than a "ok this works, kinda - but will be changed still" one :) In short, we do not have a specific date for it yet.

    Regarding the top series links, they are moving location. The navbar at the top of the page will be used for the various sections of the website and links within those sections. This does, of course, include forums as a section of its own. What actual links that will be listed there is still to be decided.

    The vast majority of forum links, though, will reside inside each user's "My Forums" dropdown - which is a customizable navigation feature added as described in posts above. The really short answer to this is, whichever forums you feel is important enough to be in your "my forums" are the ones you will check to show there.

    I'm curious about the actions, any more info on how they work?
    Will they help us translators be able to set up the post titles and icons, for example, in one click? or am i misunderstanding their purpose?

    I'm already complacent with what we have going on now. (Although I have to admit that some pictures really bug me, but I'm over them now) But upgrades are always good. Thanks for your effort. We know you guys work hard for this. Just know that however it turns out, we'll still be here. Can't wait to try it out!
