Shoutbox (Announcements) is back. Temporarily that is...

This site is currently getting LOTS of things uploaded to it. As such, the downloads section is, I agree, a bit crowded. SO! In order to help people get by while we work on improving the way you get around the site we put the shoutbox back up.

There's a catch.
  • It's temporary.
  • It's for MEMBERS ONLY(Register your account here. Adjust settings here.)

To use it, just log in or sign up, change your settings and you're set.

Once things have started to slow down the shoutbox will once again be abandoned. So enjoy it while it lasts^^.

Also, we'll keep adjusting various areas to help make the site easier, and things easier for you to find. (While criticism is great and all, suggestions on how to improve the system would be better appreciated :D.)

Thanks for it... but temporary? Frankly, I rather it be back permantely. Just do what you guys are doing now, having the option to put it on or off, so people who likes the shoutbox can have it turned on, while people who don't like it can turn it off. Wouldn't that satisfy both sides?

It is a major time requirement to keep it up to date fast, and requires a mod to be online pretty much at any given time ;(

Really I don't see why taking it away really is a gain for anyone... I mean if people don't want it they can turn it off. Personally I like it and I think it's worth keeping...

Much better in Your opinion. Some of us don't like changing something that works perfectly. I for one don't like changes at all :P.

As said before, a mod has to be online permanently. You only see it as it is, but behind the scene, a mod is on, checking every last releases, updating those that are recent, and it's not something two mods can do at the same time, or what was updated just before by a mod will be replaced accidently by another one.
It is just too much work to keep on permanently as it is :).

Just trust us, and NJT when he says something better will replace it. We didn't let you guys down so far, right? :).
Don't forget as well, that even though this is a new version of MH it is not as it will always be. The staff always work to improve things.

I got a suggestion for the "My Reading Lis", add a couple more status, for example I really can't say I'm reading Historie because I already read all that's scanlated, so if there was a status like "waiting for releases" or "pending" I would use that (this also benefits groups because they can search for mangas with this status) another status can be "waiting for volume" in Mexico Tsubasa and xxxHolic are being published so I'm waiting for the volume (can also apply for HQ taikobuns scans). I think as least the "pending" status would be a fine addition.

Temporary? That kinda sucks. I mean, I get why, but still. Nobody ever said we expect you mods to be around constantly, eyes bulging to look over every last detail. Couldn't the shoutbox be something updated every 12/24 hours or something? I mean, I personally don't use it to find out things as they happen, I think of it more as a "Cream of the crop" kind of thing, letting me know the important stuff, eventually. The "Highlights" of the day.

I don't think you guys should have caved on this. It's just going to make the ungrateful people whine even more when you take it away again. They should just learn how to subscribe to their stuff now instead of later.

Also, I agree with what Aleyr said about the Reading List.

How about an automated shoutbox? Like the scanlation table, but showing only the chapter title and number (with some kind of control to avoid double entries)? The title could send to the search link like in this temporary shoutbox.

And it would be great if the search result could also point to the discussion thread with the same name.

You guys should pull a poll asking members what is/was the most useful aspect of your website and I'm sure 95% of them will say the shoutbox. If you want to know what's new, just look in the shoutbox. You find something interesting and there's a direct link to it. Now, I've got to search for all the raws, not knowing if they were released or not? Now c'mon! Do you know how many mangas I follow? And I know I'm not alone. Just looking for all of them will be a pain. You guys were the best when it came to releasing raws. I dunno where I'll go to get that info again. lol, I still don't know if there's a release for d.grayman this week...

Yeah. I personally think just having a list of the new RAWs would be good. Even if it was updated once every 24 hours it would still be really useful.

And a question: is there any way I can just permanently turn off any scans/tranlations that are NOT in english? As in, if it isn't english, it doesn't even show up on my account, anywhere? As if it just didn't exist? Cause it's just clogging up my space right now so that I can't see the important stuff.

i wont miss the shoutbox cause i dont use it anyway. I go to this site like every day and on the days I think raws, trans and scans come out i am here like every ten minutes so I never needed it ^_^.
And now with the possibility to subscribe to any manga you like you can get a PM everytime a RAW or a Scan you like is released so theres no need for the shoutbox at all.
By the way is there a possibility to get an E-Mail everytime you get a PM? If theres not I'd like to recommend this option for this beautiful site ^_^

Thanks for your feedback. :) You can set the forum options to e-mail you when you receive a PM, since the PM actually comes through the forum software.

Go to your user control panel (accessible from MyActions menu) and edit options.

The shoutbox is one of the main reasons I use this site to check for the newest manga releases...without it I might as well go looking through the forums on other sites because that's what I'd have to do here anyways.
