New Manga Shout Out: 2/6/12 - 2/12/12

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. With the no-raws/scans rule on MH, you have to work a bit to find these mangas. A collection of short stories:

1) Kami to Onna: Sumitarou adores women's hair, but he's terrified of women themselves. He wants to become a hairdresser, but will his anxiety around women ruin his possibility of achieving his dream?

2) Hoshiirono: It looks like Junta's going to be late for school one day, when he sees a cute fellow classmate named Lili, who he knew as a young child. She claims she can use magic, and she 'proves' it in various ways throughout the day. Is Lili's magic real?

3) Onaji Sakura wa Kotoshi no Saigo: Nozomu and Yuuto have been friends and classmates since elementary school. Yuuto always thinks of Nozomu as his little brother, and affectionately calls him "cute" all the time. Nozomu doesn't like being treated like a child... Will this destroy their relationship?

4) April 1st: A group of students feel dissatisfied with their lives, for various reasons. Will starting a dodgeball club together be a solution?

Even though the war has already ended, the sky has always been full of fighter planes for Iono Akatsuki. But he never really cared why. He just went to school and carried on with his life. Akatsuki has always had better vision and body movements than the average human, but the most he got out of it was never losing a fist fight. His adopted brother, Seibu Tsubasa, who he met five years ago when they were both 9 years old and who has been like a real brother to him, on the other hand, is a genius who got his doctorate at the age of 9, and teaches Akatsuki’s class at the middle school.

But Akatsuki’s life changes when he learns about his Kigan or machine eyes, an ability only a handful of people in the world posses that allows the body to not have any limits. For example, one would be able to see at almost 360 degrees and process all the visual information available, while making decisions faster than an average human can even begin to imagine. Now as a pilot for the Warbird jets that he saw in the sky everyday, he has become the military’s secret weapon against the impending restart of the world war.

As the current generation dragon warrior, Riu Feifon has been passed down the ability to call upon the dragons for their support in defeating evil. So when an evil dragon takes over a neighboring city, Feifon calls upon the dragon realm for their power. But what she gets is Sentokun, a red dragon that has been imprisoned and sealed off for rebelling against the emperor. Feifon has to somehow convince Sentokun to help if she has any chance of defeating the evil forces threatening the city.

As Shiguri and Wilma try to rescue their friend, they'll encounter dangerous humans and non-humans, like the deadly Carpathian Devil. Shiguri will also learn more about her friend Yuri and herself!

Gengoro never held an interest in fishing even though his grandpa’s favorite hobby is fishing. He always thought it was a past time for retired old men. But when Minakami Haya, a pretty girl who’s the same age as him, moves in next door to his grandpa’s home from the country side, Gengoro begins to reconsider his initial judgment of the sport. Haya is an expert in fishing with an enormous amount of experience for her age. She's able to read the current, predict a fish’s movement and is knowledgeable about the mountains of equipment and techniques that come with fishing. But what Haya is after is the legendary Kaminotsukai or god’s messenger, a fish only heard about in stories that is said to appear every 100 years.

The collection of stories is written by many different manga authors, with drastically different art, tone and style from story to story. Many stories are comedic, and they are set in various places throughout Japan, as indicated by the 'map' table of contents.

Inaba Yuushi's parents died in his first year of middle school, and he moved in with his relatives. Though they did care for him, he could tell he was a burden. After he graduated, he happily prepared to move to a high school with a dormitory. Unfortunately, the dormitory burned to the ground before he could move in! Yuushi doesn't want to live with his grudging relatives, but it's rough finding lodging as an orphaned student with little money. He finally finds a room in a nice old building which seems too good to be true.

The catch is that it is a Monster House, a place where humans and supernatural creatures--ghosts, mononoke, etc.-- live together. Another high schooler lives there, a cute girl named Akine, and she's completely unfazed by the monsters. In fact, she can even exorcise evil spirits! Yuushi's high school life just got much stranger than he ever bargained for!

The one that stood out to me this week was Youkai Apato no Yuuga na Nichijou. With a premise like that, I'm sure there's lots of exciting directions they could take the story.
Here's what vyc had to say:
Daikusei Kuuki Heishidan - I liked this series for its artwork and plot line. The mixture of comedy, sci-fi and mystery makes for an extremely fun time reading the series.
