New Manga Shout Out: 7/23/12 - 7/29/12

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. With the no-raws/scans rule on MH, you have to work a bit to find these mangas. Nomura Moeko's family has been shaken by the death of her older brother. Not very long afterward, Moeko's father makes the decision to take the son of one of his acquaintances into his home. Kiichi is a year younger than Moeko, and Moeko's father intends for the boy to become Moeko's little brother. Moeko doesn't dislike Kiichi, but it is difficult for her to deal with her new 'replacement' brother while she is still coming to terms with her grief. Kiichi, newly come from Tokyo, enjoys his new rural life by the ocean despite the obvious problems of his new family. Of course, life goes on, and as Moeko and Kiichi go to middle school and spend more time together, maybe the slow forging of their relationship will help their new family to be able to heal.

"Hard working" or "passionate" was not in Sakurai’s vocabulary and joining a team sports in school was out of the question. But one day, he accidentally walks in on his female classmate Toyoguchi naked in the locker room and in return for keeping it a secret from everyone else, he is forced to become the manager for the female lacrosse team. Toyoguchi is passionate about lacrosse and was responsible for creating the team for the school. Sakurai reluctantly begins his role as manager but is slowly drawn into Toyoguchi’s personality and begins researching and enjoying the sport. The once lazy Sakurai who was scared of failure now learns to put himself out there and put serious effort into something worthwhile.

Few people are born to rule, while most others are born to be ruled. Kakoin Seichiro is from the latter group of people, yet he's able to attend Keiho College, a prestigious school where only the wealthy can attend and the students are those who will eventually run the country. Seichiro does this by putting up a façade that gives off the impression that he belongs in this circle and using his great intellect to manipulate people through the use of human psychology. He despises those around him for being born into a gifted situation unlike himself and will use anybody as a stepping stone to make his way up the social ladder.

One day, Seichiro is introduced to Shinmei Tamami, a teenage girl from an incredibly wealthy and powerful family, through being her tutor and discovers that, somehow, she possesses the power to materialize objects. Realizing that this will be his ticket to his dream, he tries to understand and manipulate Tamami’s incredible power.

During the war, people with magical ability were used to power magical tanks by biting on various magic plates. After the war was nominally over, rogue magic tanks still wreak destruction everywhere they go. Little Nina, after spending years being forced to use her magic to power a tank used to fight these rogue tanks, has become homeless and starving. When she attempts to steal food, she runs into a group of girls that are driving their own tank. Rather than hurt her, they take her into their home.

The group of girls comprise a private tank squad, called "Rabbits", which fights to defend their town from rampaging rogue tanks. After taking so much abuse in the past, Nina is understandably skeptical of the kindness the "Rabbits" show her, but she soon realizes that they can actually be trusted. Nina becomes the newest member of the Rabbits tank squad, dedicated to using her strength to protect others!

Sick and tired of being bullied in school, Kazu decides to get the help of the devil. Being the lazy and worthless pervert that he is, instead of standing up for himself, he attempts to curse them and ends up actually summoning the devil. Cel is still an intern devil, learning the ropes until she can become a full fledged evil being, but until then, she has to deal with Kazu. In return for granting his wish, Cel will take Kazu’s soul as a payment but things don’t go quite smooth.

This is a collection of bizarre images, shorts, and short stories. One of the most notable stories involves a young girl whose sick-seeming friend insists that she be taken to the ocean. Without asking any questions, she enlists the help of a random passing driver to fulfill her friend's strange wish. The reason for it will end up being stranger than she could have guessed! Another story involves a young girl whose older sister has an illness that has left her asleep for 8 years. One day, her older sister wakes up, and the two share their first real day together.

This is what tethysdust said this week:
The most interesting to me this week was Ane Oto. From the title and the cover, I expected it to be just another sis/bro-complex ecchi story, but it really isn't. At least in the first volume, I appreciated how they portrayed the different reactions to grief in her family, and the awkward but well-intentioned relationships with their 'replacement child.'
Here's what vyc had to say:
Cross Manage - comedy/sports/romance series that all ages/genders can appreciate. Lots of tension mixed with a comedy style that I liked. Hopefully it gets picked up to continue on Jump.

Kansokusha Tamami - psychological storyline with lots of manipulation and deception. Liked how the main character is shown as a really unlikable and untrustworthy guy, even to the reader.

My opinion:
Ane Oto sounds like it might be a good touching story, although the one that interested me the most is Kansokusha Tamami. It's always interesting to see the point of view of an "evil" protagonist.
