New Manga Shout Out: 1/31/11 - 2/6/11

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. With the no-raws/scans rule on MH, you have to work a bit to find these mangas. This week features a transfer student from hell, portals to fairy tale lands, and a 30-year-old man trapped in a toy body. Remember, if you like any of the series, favorite them. This is the story of a terrible crime committed against a 17-old-girl, committed, in part, by 17-year-old boys. Why did such a thing happen? Why was no one able to prevent it?

In the beginning, high school boys Hiroki and his friend Takashi are rescued from bullying by a notorious gangster, Miyamoto. At first, they are thrilled to be under his protection, and cheerfully run off anyone who threatens them with the mere mention of Miyamoto's name. Soon, they learn that there is a lot more to being in Miyamoto's gang than just being protected. In return, they're expected to offer loyalty and obedience, or face possibly deadly consequences. This becomes harder as the violence and the crimes they find themselves committing begins to escalate.

One night, they kidnap a high school girl, Sachiko. Now Hiroki has two battles to face. Internally, he faces the dissonance between his sense of self-preservation and his conscience. Externally, Sachiko's twin sister Miki, who goes to Hiroki's high school, her parents and the police are searching for the missing girl. Will Sachiko ever return home? What kind of person--or monster--will Hiroki become?

Sousuke is the class president, and is a stickler for the rules. Lately, he's had lots of problems. First of all, he's got to deal with his cute, but unruly, childhood friend Miroku. Secondly, they have a new transfer student, Enma, who claims to be from hell. Enma refuses to follow any rules but his own. Lastly, there's the giant, mysterious claw marks that have been appearing all over school buildings. With all this trouble going on, will Sousuke follow the rules or learn that sometimes there are more important things?

Mysteriously drawn inside the shop, Anzu opens up to Hinata about her best friend stealing her boyfriend and her teachers denying her wishes of becoming a voice actor. Suddenly feeling like a weight was lifted off her shoulders, Anzu becomes really interested in Hinata and they come to be very good friends.

Ai is a fifteen-year-old girl who is living in the bad part of town, with her drunken, promiscuous mother. Her delinquent friends, Kana and Miki, regularly use Ai as bait to extort money from middle-aged men trying to buy sex. Ai feels horribly alone and trapped in a life she does not want.

Jun is a fifteen-year-old boy living in an elegant mansion. He has a teacher to give him lessons at home, and he studies the violin. He never leaves his home, though, due to his severe congenital heart disease. When any overexertion might lead to his death, playing it safe has always taken priority over interacting with other people.

Jun and Ai, both feeling confined and lonely, find each other through an internet social network on their cell phones. Soon, they have formed a deep friendship and possibly more. But will their affection for each other be able to overcome the extreme differences in their lives and upbringing?

Dozuru is a great auk, the first bird ever to be referred to as a "penguin." He leaves his few remaining family members to search for a better place for all of them. Unfortunately, he is first picked up by the sadistic Yoshie Tanaka. She tells him that his species is extinct, and, to keep from ending up a lab rat, he'll have to pass as a weird penguin. After some cruel surgical alterations, Dozuru is on his own once again.

This time, he is picked up by the siblings Hareru and Harema Haruno. Harema, the older brother, adores pets and eagerly takes in the ailing penguin. His little sister is more reluctant, but gives Dozuru his new name "Kushi P" (a name based on the assumption that they'll eat him eventually). It seems like everything is going well for the little "penguin." However, Kushi P has started a habit of slaughtering the other animals around him, and Yoshie is still lurking in the shadows. Will Dozuru/Kushi P ever be able to rejoin his family!?

Miu escapes back to her house only to find that the man and the woman is none other than her brother Keiichiro and his summoned demon sex slave Manimani. It turns out that Keiichiro is a magician that was able to summon Manimani from the depths of hell. With everything she thought of her brother shattered into oblivion, Miu has no idea what to do.

Ignacio DaSilva is a world famous Brazilian karate expert turned soccer player who has been making headlines. His giant body and unusual speed has made him the number one player in the world by far. During his post game interview, he stated that there was someone with more talent than him and that he was coming back from Brazil any time soon. This left the media in a frenzy to find who this player was that was better than the great Ignacio.

Kensho is the son of a karate master who grew up with his next door neighbor, Satsuka, who was the daughter of a soccer coach. As fate may have it, Kensho became a great soccer player and moved to Brazil for 3 years while Satsuka stayed in Japan and became the scholastic champion in her division. Kensho comes back to Japan and attends the same high school as Satsuka. Little does the world know about the tornado that was about to hit the soccer community with the return of Kensho.

Purinosuke is a 30 year old man trapped in a toy body and is the last remaining member of the human race. When the Moon crashed into Earth and destroyed humanity, he was in space aboard the Prinius working as the apprentice galaxy museum curator. He cryogenically froze his body and transferred his memories into a toy so that he could continue his search for any survivors other than him. Accompanied by his robot maid, Shehera, and a random ghost, Purinosuke has to wander the cold deep space without giving up hope that there is someone out there somewhere.

This is what tethysdust said this week:
There were some pretty intense manga this week. The weirdest, by far, was Kushiyaki P. If small animals being dismembered bothers you, you should probably give this one a pass. 17sai is actually pretty engrossing, but, from the title, I'm guessing the ending is going to be horrifically sad. It's interesting to see a crime story from the point of view of an unwilling perpetrator. Jun to Ai was sort of like a teen romance novel (but with a couple of scenes of fairly explicit sex). A lot more time is spent on talking about feelings and "will they-won't they" end up together than on any sexual content, though. Paradise Paradox mixes some common tropes. There's the over-enthusiastic lesbian girl looking for her soulmate, and the whole idea of fairy-tale land portals. It came together into an entertaining story, though. Enma Gavel was the most generic one I read this week. It was pretty standard demon-fighting shounen.

Great series this week. Check them out Tiny Prinius - comedy where the last human alive is trapped in a toy body. Travels through space with his crew consisting of a robot maid and a random ghost. How cool is that. Nagisa chan no kareshi - romantic comedy. it's actually more comedy than love than you might think. well worth giving a try. Syura no mon - loved reading the chapters. the storyline was solid, the characters were very developed and just a great series. Wouldnt expect anything less from such a great and famous author. Definitely pick this up.
My opinion:
17sai. Joshikousei Kankin Satsujin sounds good, although tragic like tethy said... Jun to Ai sounds like an interesting romance story. Nagisa-chan no Kareshi sounds like a cute fluffy manga that'd make you go d'aww~
