New Manga Shout Out: 2/14/11 - 2/20/11

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. With the no-raws/scans rule on MH, you have to work a bit to find these mangas. This week features ninjas, nurses, and suicide. Edo has turned into a dark city ridden with corrupted officials, greedy merchants, criminal organizations running rampant and civilians occupied with sinful acts. Kuuya and Tenshiro are both incredibly skilled ninjas and also childhood friends who have been summoned by the new chief, Torii. He is disgusted by what Edo has turned into and wants to clean up the city even if it means that he has to take drastic measures.

Tenshiro, who has always been searching for his meaning in life, accepts Torii’s vision but Kuuya, being the lone wolf that he is, decides to walk away, thinking that Torii is no less different than the other diseases infecting Edo. Now childhood friends and the best ninjas in the city have to confront each other and the only way they can walk away is if one of them is dead.

Kasuga Takao is a boy who loves reading books, particularly Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal. A girl at his school, Saeki Nanako, is his muse and his Venus, and he admires her from a distance. One day, he forgets his copy of Les Fleurs du Mal in the classroom and runs back alone to pick it up. In the classroom, he finds not only his book, but Saeki's gym uniform. On a mad impulse, he steals it.

Now everyone knows 'some pervert' stole Saeki's uniform, and Kasuga is dying with shame and guilt. Furthermore, the weird, creepy, and friendless girl of the class, Nakamura, saw him take the uniform. Instead of revealing it was him, she recognizes his kindred deviant spirit and uses her knowledge to take control of his life. Will it be possible for Kasuga to get closer to Saeki, despite Nakamura's meddling and his dark secret? What exactly does Nakamura intend to do with him?

Collection of the author's short works, which have appeared in various magazines.

The first volume contains works from 1997 to 2007:
1) 小さな世界 (Small World) - Mikasa sees little people on the shoulders of everyone around her, quietly telling them how to interact with others. She is the only one who can see them, and so she has a great partnership with her own shoulder-person. But one day, he disappears! How will she cope without her constant advisor?

2) 7.5Ｈｚ - A gothic lolita hikikomori girl leaves her room one day to find a world gone mad. For some reason, all humans have become ridiculously violent, killing people they love over the tiniest annoyances. Armed with a frying pan, she makes her way out into this new world.

3) kurutare - After a long war, the remaining people are amusing themselves with weekly gun duels. An incredibly skilled gun-woman, Ellie, takes in a surprisingly talented child, Barret, after her duel. Barret claims her skill comes from her magic gun, but there are stories of horrifying child soldiers from during the war...

4) イレイザー・ヘッド (Eraser Head) - A woman is stalking a man she has a desperate crush on. In order to help him get over his old girlfriend, she attempts to hire a man with the ability to erase people's memories. He refuses the job, but she won't take no for an answer.

5) 運命の人 (Fated Person) - Tenpo confesses to liking Hazome, but she rejects him. She insists on loving only her 'fated person' with whom she will have a miraculous meeting. Will Tenpo find a way past her starry-eyed idealism?

6) 十代の潜水生活 (The Teenage Diving Life) - A young boy robs a hospital, and, in the process, breaks out a suicidal crippled girl. Will he be able to inspire her to once again face living?

Ichabod is a child of two lesbians, Mary and Ellie, and his mothers have made it no secret of their disappointment at his birth. They had been hoping for a daughter, not a son. Now Ellie has run off, so their family is reduced to just Ichabod and Mary. He believes the legendary thief, Mushu, is his father, due to the blue birthmark they both have on their neck. In the absence of a father figure in his life, he imagines conversations with Mushu while gazing at the wanted posters.

One day, in a bid for sympathy and attention from his critical mother, Ichabod injures himself, and ends up in the hospital. Once there, he befriends his neighbor, who happens to be an arrested jewel thief, Ganzu, from a notorious criminal group. When he learns that his new friend might have information about Mushu, he volunteers as a hostage to help him escape. Now Ichabod is off on his adventure with Ganzu and his group and who knows what he will find!

Suga Kimio finds himself hiding in the girls locker room, unable to move or escape the situation as the girls in his school crowd in. Although he had no ulterior motives, he found himself panicking as he heard the girls coming in and hid in a locker. To his dismay, Komine Nozomi, one of the shy girls in the class finds him, but surprisingly doesn’t scream or even acknowledge that he is there; in fact, she covers for him. Perplexed but glad, Kimio goes home.

However, later that night, he gets a text from Nozomi who happens to live across the way on the same floor of the condo they both live in. She blackmails him into agreeing to show each other’s bodies when she texts him. Kimio has to abide by Nozomi’s insane demands or risk ruining his school life so they both start their little peep show through each other’s windows…

1) 死出の旅路 (Journey to the Afterlife): A man decides that his life has no meaning and wants to die. To give his death meaning, he finds a middle school girl on the internet who wants to kill someone. Neither killing nor dying is as easy as it seems.

2) 飛行少年と呼ばれて (Called the Flying Boy): Tobu jumps off of his high school building, breaking his legs. A female classmate visits him every day, always eager to talk about his leap, but there is more to her than meets the eye.

3) 彼女の思いで (Memories of Her): A boy's crush dies in an accident, but her spirit comes to him that night as a ghost.

4) 遺されしもの (The Things Left Behind): A boy deals with the decline and death of his grandmother.

5) 生きててよかった (Thank God You're Alive): Masato's sense of self-worth is shattered by his poor school performance, and he considers committing murder. Surprisingly, he finds a willing victim...

6) ゴーストタウン (Ghost Town): Yuka is living in a ghost town and can't help feeling dead herself. She convinces her parents to hire her a home tutor, and she uses him for the only thing that makes her feel alive.

7) 銀河鉄道の帰途 (Return of the Galaxy Railroad): After Rieko's boyfriend dies in an accident, she decides to go on the trip to the beach that they had planned for the summer. Her classmate Seko, who has had a crush on her, decides to make sure she doesn't make the journey alone.

8) 未然の少女A (Preventative Girl A): Yoshino thinks humans are separated into those who can kill others and those who can't. She thinks she's in the former group, but her teacher is determined to teach her the value of human life.

This 4-koma style manga features the life of newbie nurse Nakai Momo. She works at the small, old, but high quality Satou Birthing Center. She has many everyday adventures and misadventures as she learns how to be a good nurse. She has a really hard time with giving shots, and she desperately wants a boyfriend-- although single men are kind of rare to meet at a birthing center! One day, she hopes to be as poised and experienced as the older, married nurse, Seki Nao. She has a long road ahead of her!

This is what tethysdust said this week:
There were a couple of good short story collections (Chiisana Sekai, Reborn), but they were both pretty dark. Reborn is kind of depressing to read all at once, since all the stories involve death, but Chiisana Sekai has a lot of varied topics. Aku no Hana was kind of hilarious. I think it was going for romanticism, so all the character are INCREDIBLY dramatic about everything. It sort of made me feel like I should read Les Fleurs du Mal, though. Ichabod no Seikatsu is a very unusual story, so that made it an exciting read for me. Tenshi no Oshigoto is a cute, light, comedy.
Here's a note from vyc:
Dakara Boku wa H ga Dekinai - still the first chapter and nothing has been explained to us. Want to know more about who the girl is and it's based on a novel so i think there is a lot of material to go on. Nozomi to Kimio - same author of Nozoki Ana. Sort of the same concept but different and younger characters. Sexy scenes and interesting plot lines will surely come from this author. Aizen Faust - Very exciting series. Lots of adult scenes but the main plot line is interesting as is the 2 main characters. Reading one volume felt like nothing and I want to read more.
My opinion:
Chiisana Sekai's and Re-born's oneshots all seem to have interesting topics.
