New Manga Shout Out: 3/19/12 - 3/25/12

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. With the no-raws/scans rule on MH, you have to work a bit to find these mangas. This week features a cafe connecting the demon and human world, a lazy spirit guiding the Japanese Prime Minister and a century old puzzle. Remember, if you like any of the series, favorite them. After high-schooler Nanatsu Io is crushed by disappointment in love, she finds herself pulled into a strange cafe, "Cafe Acheron," by pretty male workers, Kiba and Resato. Io decides to change herself by getting a job there as a waitress. In order to do so, she makes a contract with the cafe owner, Kiba, who tells her she must keep her stuffed bear (now conscious and referring to itself as "Father") with her.

It's only after this contract is formed that Io begins to learn the truth! Cafe Acheron connects the demon world and the human world, and it's there that many deals between demons and humans are made. In fact, Kiba and Resato are demons themselves, and Io is already bound to them by contract! Her strange new life is just beginning!

It was decided that Nishi High School would close in two years time and since then, the student population had dramatically dropped down to a total of seven. The remaining students, including Hazakura Motoya, decided to stay for the free ride through high school. So everyone is shocked when they suddenly receive three new transfer students, all girls: Kayama, Mizumura and Toujou. But their appearance is just a cover; they are elite members of a special military division that reports only to the president.

Soon after, Motoya witnesses a giant tower suddenly appearing on the school grounds. According to his new classmates, the tower can only be seen by a handful of chosen people and that all the military technology that the country has been able to develop in recent years was based on the information gathered from inside the mysterious tower. Motoya has been chosen by destiny to enter the tower with Kayama, Mizumura and Toujou to uncover the mysteries of the tower.

Very rarely, rifts in dimensions occur and creatures that people refer to as demons infiltrate our world. Koichiro and Maria was a young couple who unfortunately was targeted by one of these demons. The end of the civil war signaled the start of the industrial revolution in the United States and immigrants from all over the world traveled to find their American dream. But what awaited the majority of them was poverty, discrimination and hopelessness. Manhattan, New York was full of immigrants flooding through the ports and the 6th district, Five Points, was considered at the time, the world’s worst slum. The mobsters corrupted the entire area, including the police by paying them off; Five Points was the mob’s territory and they were the law.

But even in Five Points, where there seemed to be nothing but robbery, prostitution and murder, showed some signs of hope. Luke Burns was a honest and righteous teenager who realized that the mob was the cause of the harsh lifestyle and that joining the mobsters would not bring him the American dream. But his older brother, Brad Burns, had become the assassin to the biggest mob group of Five Points, the Grave Diggers, a secret he kept from Luke for his own protection. Brad was known as the Grim Reaper and his reputation preceded him as a ruthless and skilled killer.

After the body dies, the soul lives on. Many spirits progress toward the world of light, through the levels of the spirit world where they study how to improve their souls. These spirits are sometimes reincarnated into the physical world, and sometimes they are sent back as guardian spirits for other living people. Guardian spirits must protect their charges souls from the blackness that oozes up from the world of darkness below.

Riyon is a very laid-back spirit, who often skips her spirit classes to fool around. To train her further, she is sent back to the physical world as a guardian spirit. Instead of following a human from birth, she is helping a beleaguered man, the Japanese Prime Minister Kasuga Soichiro, in the last year and a half of his life. After an unexpected close call with death, Kasuga gains some unusual talents, including the ability to see Riyon. Will Riyon and Kasuga together be able to protect his battered soul?

Puzzle fanatic Daimon Kaito has been crazy about solving brain teasers, puzzles and riddles his entire life. He attends the prestigious Root Academy with Nonoha, but spends most of his time creating and solving puzzles. Kaito is one of the few genius teenagers that attend the school who has been given the title Einstein, along with his other just as brilliant classmates who were given the titles Galileo, Edison and Da Vinci. Together, they attempt to solve a puzzle that, since its creation centuries ago, has never been solved. But the genius students soon realize that there are dangerous forces behind the impossible puzzle.

This is what tethysdust said this week:
Hito Hitori Futari was my favorite this week. Even past the life of the Prime Minister, I think there's a lot that can be done with that premise. Kanojo to Camera seemed like a neat capturing of the confusion of being a teenager, dealing with all the hormones, and trying to sort out your own feelings and identity.
Here's what vyc had to say:
Green Blood - set in post civil war New York. I really like how it's set in Manhattan when mobsters ruled the towns. Lots of heavy action/violence but what kept me interested were the characters and the overarching plot line of finding their lost father.

Phi Brain Kami no Puzzle - I really like the idea of this series. Instead of the traditional physically powerful characters, they have characters that use their intelligence and brain power to overcome their opponents. It would be cool if the reader got a chance to solve the mystery too.
My opinion:
Nothing really is striking me as very different, although I guess I'm a little curious about the puzzle in Phi Brain.
