New Manga Shout Out: 7/1/13 - 7/14/13

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. This weekly article introduces you to manga that are new and/or have not been scanlated yet. This week features the son of a famous sumo wrestler, people stuck living in a MMO, and a town with people with powers. Remember, if you like any of the series, favorite them. Sei is a Chinese student, studying in Japan. He stays at an apartment building near the college, which is full of students. One of the residents is a Japanese girl named Yukiko, who he really likes. It often seems that she likes him, too, but he has a hard time reading her signals. Cultural and language misunderstandings crop up between them, and Sei often ends up saying or doing exactly the wrong thing. Will he be able to win Yukiko's heart?

Samejima Koitaro is the only child of the Karyu, a sumo wrestler infamous for being foul-mouthed and vicious in the ring. Koitaro took pride in his father's strength and attitude, but one event changed it all. His father got involved in a bar fight, injuring multiple people. This led to him being expelled from the sumo league. Since the incident, his father was no longer the proud and strong sumo wrestler that Koitaro always admired. Years have past since his father died by challenging a truck in a tackling match. Now, Koitaro can't resist entering the sumo world and challenging all who stand in his way to become the next champion.

This manga is related to the "Date A Live" novel and anime. It features members of the AST (AntiSpirit Team), a special squad devoted to fighting spirits. Okamine Mikie idolizes her superior AST member, Tobiichi Origami, and may be in love with her as well. Unfortunately, Origami seems to want nothing to do with her. One day, they end up heading toward an explosion that wasn't caused by a spirit. Instead, it was caused by a girl named Ashley Sinclair, who transfers to their school shortly after the incident!

Nearly half the population of Sakurada, a small town near the Pacific Ocean, has some sort of unique power. These powers range from being able to enter the mind of a cat, to resetting the world back to a certain point in time in the past. There is a group known as the "Kanrikyoku" that controls and monitors the use of these powers. Asai Kei and Haruki Misora work for their school's club called "Houshi" club, which execute any missions received from the Kanrikyoku. Misora has the ability to reset the world 3 days. This means that all events and any memory of the past 3 days that "could have" happened, never happened. Kei has the ability to "remember" the past. Even after Misora uses her powers to reset the world back 3 days, Kei will retain those 3 days in his memory. Combining their powers, these two solve missions issued by the Kanrikyoku.

Aoi prefers indoor hobbies and is afraid of heights, but her childhood friend Hinata loves to show off her passion for mountain climbing. As young children, they once watched the sunrise from the top of a mountain, and now they've decided to take up mountain climbing in hopes of seeing that sunrise again. They have cooking battles with mountaineering gear, climb small hills in their neighborhood, and meet new mountaineering friends as they learn the ropes of the hobby. When will they finally see that sunrise again?

Yama no Susume has actually already been adapted to an anime, which has been translated, so I just put the summary from the anime. I read a good portion of the manga, and there does not seem to be a significant difference between the two. Other than that, not much to comment on this week!
Here's what DrCoke had to say:
Sakurada Reset is slow, but the concept is interesting. I would keep reading this just to find out what the opening scene actually means. Sumo mangas are always entertaining and have a lot of impact, so I liked Bachi Bachi. Log Horizon also looks promising.

My opinion:
Log Horizon and Sakurada Reset both seem pretty interesting...
