New Manga Shout Out: 4/30/12 - 5/6/12

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. With the no-raws/scans rule on MH, you have to work a bit to find these mangas. On his seventeenth birthday, Amamiya Kota was going to ask his classmate Misora Hiyori out. Tragically, he dies in a car accident but is given a second chance back in the living world on borrowed time. He gets entered into a competition called the 13 Game where other people like Kota who were supposed to die return back to the world and given an option: locate and kill 13 other players or suffer the fate of death. Each player is assigned to a handler, mysterious beings with special powers, who use them as if they were characters in a video game. Kota’s handler, Merume, explains that there are players like him all over the country, each with a unique ability that helps them kill, and Kota has to kill 13 players within 1 year. With his demon hands ability that was inspired from his hobby of magic tricks, Kota must unwillingly participate in this cruel game if he wants to live.

The sole survivor and witness to the serial kidnapping case that drew national attention 10 years ago was Oyamada Yusuke. In the end, a total of 108 children vanished into thin air and the case remains unsolved. Since that incident, Yusuke has been able to see evil spirits and has been attempting to seclude himself from society. But one day, he meets Kanon, a member of the anti-doll organization. She explains that the spirits that he has been seeing are called dolls and are the manifestation of people’s incredibly strong emotions. Yusuke accidentally releases a doll named Masaki that even the organization had to resort to simply imprisoning her instead of destroying her. However, Yusuke learns that Masaki has a connection to the kidnapping case that he was involved in years ago!

He's an expert at reading people, and he deals with each case with a professional calm. He typically makes just one offer to settle with the wrongdoers, before he takes any action that will harm their careers. Some cases in volume one include a young woman who can't escape her career as a prostitute, and a young man who is being harassed by his boss for refusing her sexual advances.

However, Yukari insists that the things she says she sees is true, and her vision seems to give her insight into the abilities of others.

Gaku thinks she's just weird, but she soon realizes that Yukari has unexpected talents. It seems she can fix anything, and even the police come to hear her insights. It turns out that Yukari's purple eyes are not unique in the world! However, there is one important distinction among those who see humans as other objects. Do humans appear as unimportant as objects, or do those objects appear as important as human beings?

Four guy friends navigate their teenage years together. Hashiba Natsuki is a sweet, often-lovestruck guy who often naively goes to his friends for their advice about love. Matsunaga Tomoya is a good-looking narcissist who always has a few girlfriends. Katakura Keiichi seems really cheerful and friendly, but he's actually into BDSM. Naoe Tsuyoshi is an otaku who gets good grades and has a girlfriend who's into cosplay. Together they help each other get through the good times and bad.

It was a weird feeling for Saki when she received an inheritance from a father whom she had never even met before. And it got even more odd when she was required to live in a house away from her grandparents for a short while. But what topped off the cake was when Saki found out her roommates were going to be four other girls, all daughters of her father from different mothers, which made them all half sisters. They all range in age from the youngest at elementary school to the oldest already in college. From going to the only child to living in the house with four new sisters is going to be a new experience for Saki, but she is warming up to the idea of having sisterly bonds.

This is what tethysdust said this week:
Murasakiiro no Qualia was really weird. I thought it was going for school-life-comedy at the beginning, but then it took a turn for the serious and surreal. Scipio to Hannibal would probably be interesting for fans of that historical period. Nijiiro Days was light and cute. Gota Keshi was the most realistic of this week's manga, and it had some pretty interesting cases.

I liked the Shounen series this week. If you liked any of the big titles in the past few years, you should check these out for sure.

13 Game - I liked the original plot line. Teens gains power through death and abilities based on magic tricks. I feel like it has lots of room to grow and you'll see new kinds of abilities from enemies and the main character.

Dolls Folklore - Again, really liked the original storyline. It draws the reader in as it progresses because although it answers some questions, it brings up new ones that keep the reader glued to the pages.
My opinion:
13 Game sounds a bit interesting although once he kills 13 people, then what? I feel like he'd be sucked into another game in order to stay alive. Ad Astra - Scipio to Hannibal reminds me a bit of Historie, which is pretty interesting. The mystery element of Doll's Folklore has piqued my interest. I wonder how so many kids could go missing and yet the kidnapper is still not caught...
